My telling of trials of my Sword Brother Wulfgar as he attempts to completre his training and becom a Kensman. If you were not there, you should have been...

Sword Brother Wulfgar rose with the sun to prepare himself for the trials that lay ahead of him. He cast the runes to see how the Gods looked upon his fate this day. Tiewaz (Tyr’s rune) success, leadership, will, honor and victory in battle. A fine cast indeed. Soon after, dark clouds gathered on the horizon. The sun was lost and a light drizzle began to fall.

At the appointed hour, Wulfgar arrived at the battlefield where two-dozen warriors, friends, and family awaited. They had traveled from kingdoms and realms both far and near to bear witness, and participate in this trial. Former Kings, Kensmen, Knights, and men and women-of-arms of all abilities had gathered to take up arms against the Sword Brother.

Wulfgar was told to present his arms and armor for inspection and judgment. His weapons were found to be of good quality, well made, sturdy and well maintained. The weapons each had fitted covers with his personal symbol painted upon them. He presented three shields, each of excellent quality, well made, with tight fitted covers, each bearing Wulfgar’s frothing tankard. Two suits of armor were added to the collection. The first, a well crafted suit of leather scales tooled with runes in silver upon each scale. The second a suit of heavy chain maille, rolled, cut and knit by the Sword Brother's own hand.

Once the inspection and judgment of arms was complete, Sword Brother Wulfgar was given the opportunity to arm and armor himself as he saw fit, and to prepare for his run. Wulfgar choose two weapons (one broad sword, and a barrel mace), and his bracers. These choices would prove to serve him well on the challenge ahead. My Sword Brother prepared himself for the task at hand, a two-mile run through forest and field. Enemies looking to deny Wulfgar's passage lay in wait along the trail. He did not know who, or where they were, but he knew they were out there.

I told Wulfgar to remember “fire and hammer blows”, this is how raw iron is forged into hardened steel and how Sword Brothers are made into Kensmen. The drizzle began to fall in earnest. as we prepared ourselves. The half-hour glass was readied to set the Sword Brother’s time; he would have until the sands ran out to complete this portion of the trial. Wulfgar cried out “OOO-DINNN!!!” and set off on his run, with me trailing behind to observe.

Wulfgar set off at an ambitious pace gaining in speed as he made his way along the winding downhill trail. The momentum he gained helped to carry him up much of the quarter mile climb uphill. Not long after the trail topped the steep hill and leveled out, Wulfgar turned from the wide well traveled road into the forest. His new path, a narrow, root covered deer run, the rains of the last couple of days had made the small trail slick and muddy. Footing was treacherous, on he ran. This is where his first opponent waited for him.

Zaron Lagohathol Steward of Mittlemarch was armed with a great sword stood waiting in a clearing. The two faced off and raised their arms in a sign of respect. Wulfgar immediately sprang forward allowing Zaron no time, or room to swing his five foot long great sword. The Sword Brother forced the long blade down into the ground with his barrel mace, while dealing several deep cuts with his broad sword.. The duel was over almost before it began.

Kinsman Oron the Wolf

A hard, lean, man of middle age, with long brown hair, and a handle bar mustache. An obvious veteran of many campaigns, wearing light leather armor. A short sword is strapped to his left hip, a large knife rests against the back of his wide hero's belt, and a small oval shield hangs over his shoulder.

Wulfgar ran on, along the narrow muddy trail, hurdling downed trees that crossed the path as the course turned downhill. He had to work hard to keep his footing as the trail wound it’s way back to rejoin the main cinder covered path, here, another opponent waited. Sakura NoJutsu, armed with a pair of long swords, stood blocking Wulfgar’s path.

My Sword Brother raised his weapons in salute and attacked. A quick flurry of attacks and blocks followed as each warrior looked to find an opening. Sakura struck first blood, wounding Wulfgar’s left leg, but her victory would be short lived. Wulfgar returned the favor as he was falling to his wounded knee. Wulfgar struck again, a fatal blow, crushing her ribs. She was dead before she could hit the ground. Sword Brother Wulfgar drew himself up, and without hesitation, raced on.

The path turned back uphill taking Wulfgar back to the pavilion that was the starting point of this challenge. He pushed his legs hard, driving them onward up the steep hill, breathing hard short breaths, as his Kensman had taught him. The pavilion marked the halfway point to this trial. Eight minutes gone, one mile finished, one more to go. Many people still waited at the pavilion to cheer on my Sword Brother as he passed by. Onward he ran, past the crowd and into the forest. Inside the forest on a narrow trail his next opponent stood in anticipation.

The dwarf Baethor Thunderblood stood in stony silence heavily armored in thick scales and armed with battle-axe and war shield. Wulfgar wasted no time barreling into and knocking down the dwarf. But my Sword Brother failed to notice the stabbing tip on the dwarf’s axe, a mistake that would cost him. That mistake cost him his first bout. They stood and fought again. Wulfgar again pressed Baethor hard, forcing him to the ground under his shield. Wulfgar pinned Baethor’s axe to the ground and quickly hacked off anything that stuck out from underneath.
